Official e-newsletter of AAP New York Chapter 2 September 2009
Dear NY2 Member,

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce your new Chapter officers.  My name is Bram Jelin.  I will be your president for the next two years.  I am a pediatric gastroenterologist practicing in Brooklyn and I am the Associate Chairman of Pediatrics at the Brooklyn Hospital Center.  Your vice-president is Rich Ancona who is in private practice in Suffolk County.  Marc Lashley is your secretary.  He is in private practice in Valley Stream.  Jay Abularrage is your treasurer.  He is the Chairman of Pediatrics at New York Hospital Queens.  Ishvar Patel who is in private practice in Queens, is the immediate past president.

I am looking forward to a productive tenure as your president.  I will try to keep your informed of chapter activities including dinner meetings, advocacy events and issues.  I am serious about communication but communication is a bilateral proposition.  I want to hear your concerns so that I can accurately represent you.  My email address is bramjel@aol.com

Sincerely,
Bram Jelin, MD, FAAP
President, AAP NY Chapter 2

Pediatric Coding Update for 2010 - Dec. 15th

We are planning an educational dinner program on December 15th which will concentrate on billing and coding issues.  Registration details will be emailed to NY Chapter 2 members.  Plans for other dinner meetings are also in the planning stage.
Working with the
County Pediatric Societies

Your officers had their first formal meeting to begin planning for the next two years.  A major thrust will be to integrate chapter activities with the activities of the county societies.  We will be inviting the society presidents to participate in the officers meetings.  We hope to have a chapter presence at society meetings.  We believe that this integration will enhance the value of society membership and promote membership in the AAP and Chapter 2.
New Committee on Membership

We have a new committee comprised of past presidents.  This committee was the inspiration of Warren Seigel and will focus its energy on expanding chapter membership.
Advocacy Update

The children of New York will benefits by two bills passed in the legislature and signed by the Governor.  The first mandates that flu vaccine be offered by hospitals to parents, caretakers and siblings of NICU patients.  This measure will reduce the exposure of these vulnerable infants to influenza.  The second provides for the promulgation of a breast feeding bill of rights to be posted in hospitals and birthing centers.  Our advocacy efforts continue unabated guided by George Dunkel and Elie Ward our representatives and mentor in Albany.  By the way, put February 23, 2010 on your calendar to travel to Albany for our annual Lobby Day.  It will be a long day but I can guarantee it will be educational, fun and productive.  Your participation will make a difference.
Be Heard! Write a Resolution!

Voting is an important privilege and responsibility of membership in the Academy.  It is a way for you to influence your academy.  There is another avenue for you to influence academy policy.  You can write a resolution.  A resolution is a document that reflects your opinion about issues that are relevant to the practice of pediatrics. Once you write a resolution it will be presented and debated by the leadership of the Academy at the Annual Leadership Forum.  If it is passed by a majority at that meeting it gets forwarded to the AAP Board of Directors for consideration as AAP policy.  If there is something concerning you, you will be heard!  For resolution assistance, please contact the NY Chapter 2 Office at 516-326-0310 or jgeslani@aap.org.

NY Chapter 2 on ITV!

Many of you know that the chapter, under the leadership of Ishvar Patel, developed a TV series broadcast on ITV, a local cable network catering to a South Asian audience.  Nearly 40 segments covering a variety of pediatric issues were aired.  This is an ongoing project and Ishvar may be calling on one of you to share your expertise in this project.  I did two segments and enjoyed the experience.  It was particularly fun seeing Ishvar grow in his role as moderator.  Larry King had better watch out!

Pediatrics-Psychiatry Collaboration Project

Many pediatricians are becoming more involved in caring for complicated mental health issues such as ADHD, OCD, Tourette's and depression.  Issues of diagnosis and treatment can become very involved.  In an effort to improve office management of these difficult issues, a group of general pediatricians and developmental specialists in Chapter 2 are collaborating with Dr. Carmel Foley, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Schneider Children's Hospital.

Dr. Jack Levine and Dr. Marc Lashley have developed this project based on models of pediatric mental health programs presented at the 2007 AAP Future of Pediatrics conference.  The physicians get together three or four times a year for face to face discussions and case presentations.  The crux of the program, however, consists of email communication with Dr. Foley resulting in patient specific timely psychiatric input.   An additional component is facilitated psychiatric referrals if needed.  Some recent examples of consultations include a child with ADHD unresponsive to stimulants, a teen with autism who won't sleep, a child on stimulants and Clonidine with night terrors and advice on how to switch from one SSRI to another.

While this project is not for all pediatricians, if you like dealing with mental health issues on your own, it is a great opportunity.  If interested please contact Jack Levine at jmlevine@optonline.net.
