What it is supposed to do:

Lower cholesterol and blood pressure; prevent cancer : treat infection; enhance immune function; anti-oxidant effects

How it is supposed to work:

The components of garlic are thought to have antibacterial, cardiovascular and anticancer benefits.

Toxic effects:

No specific toxicity but can cause stomach irritation (including flatulence, heartburn, gastric disturbances); should not be used in those who are pregnant or taking anti-HIV medications; can prolong bleeding and clotting times.

Does it work?

Randomized controlled trials suggest possible small, short-term benefits on some lipid and antiplatelet factors.  Effects on blood pressure are mixed and small.

Available as fresh garlic, tablets and oil; cooking destroys the active components
