Also known as:
Carbs, Starches
What it's supposed to do:
Increase exercise endurance
How it's supposed to work:
Carbohydrates
are sugars which are the main source of energy for our bodies.
Carbohydrates are in many foods that we eat, including vegetables,
grains, sweets, fruits, sugars and dairy products like milk, cheese and
yogurt. Since carbohydrates are the main source of energy, taking the right
amount of carbohydrates at the right time (“carbohydrate loading”) may
help make sure that energy is available for prolonged exercise endurance.
Do they work?
For
endurance events, like marathon running, carbohydrates can improve performance
and delay fatigue.
For short events there is no benefit.
Taken right after exercise can help replenish the energy stores.
Are they safe?
Pretty
safe.
Sometimes too much carbohydrates can cause other
problems like weight gain or low blood sugar.
