Kava kava

Kava pepper, Kawa-kawa

What it's supposed to do?

Treat headaches, depression, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, improve sex drive, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory for the urinary tract.

How it's supposed to work?

Chemical components in kava extract interact with pain receptors in the brain and may relax muscles.  The pain-killing effects can last for 24 hours.

Does it work?

Several studies have shown that moderate to severe anxiety was reduced.

Is it safe?

Most common side effect is gastrointestinal problems. 

"Kava dermopathy" is an allergic skin reaction. 

May cause impaired mental functioning, impaired judgment when driving, hallucinations, euphoria, weakness, ataxia, blurred vision, CNS intoxication, deafness.

Long term use can cause liver damage and decreased blood cell counts.

Do not use with alcohol or other depressants.  Not to be used during pregnancy or nursing.

Do not use for 2 weeks before surgery.
